Serenity Psychotherapy Group Introduces Specialized Mindfulness-Based Therapy Programs in the District of Columbia
Serenity Psychotherapy Group, a leading provider of mental health services in the Washington metropolitan area, announced today the launch of mindfulness-based therapy programs designed to address the growing demand for evidence-based mental health interventions in the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - July 24, 2025 - Serenity Psychotherapy Group, a leading provider of mental health services in the Washington metropolitan area, announced today the launch of mindfulness-based therapy programs designed to address the growing demand for evidence-based mental health interventions in the District of Columbia.

The new specialized programs integrate four established mindfulness approaches: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These therapeutic modalities have demonstrated effectiveness for conditions including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and stress-related disorders.

"Mindfulness-based approaches represent a significant advancement in mental health treatment, offering clients practical skills that extend beyond the therapy office into daily life," said Sarah Charmchi, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Director of Serenity Psychotherapy Group. "Our new programs combine evidence-based psychological techniques with mindfulness practices to create comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each individual's unique needs."

The expansion comes in response to increasing research supporting mindfulness interventions and growing client interest in alternatives to traditional therapy approaches. Each program emphasizes present moment awareness, non-judgmental observation, and acceptance as foundational principles while addressing specific mental health concerns.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, forms a cornerstone of the new offerings. This structured eight-week program combines meditation practices such as body scan, sitting meditation, and mindful movement to help clients develop greater awareness of the mind-body connection.

For clients experiencing recurrent depression, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) provides specialized interventions focusing on changing the relationship to thoughts rather than challenging their content. Research demonstrates MBCT's effectiveness in reducing relapse rates for depression, making it approximately as effective as maintenance antidepressant medication for preventing recurrence.

The specialized programs also include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which incorporates mindfulness as one of four core skill modules alongside emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Originally developed for treating borderline personality disorder, DBT has expanded to address conditions characterized by emotion dysregulation.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) rounds out the offerings, helping clients develop psychological flexibility and align behaviors with personal values. ACT techniques include cognitive defusion exercises that teach clients to observe thoughts without being dominated by them, creating psychological space for more flexible responses to challenging situations.

"The therapeutic relationship remains central to effective treatment outcomes," noted Charmchi. "Our clinicians have completed specialized training in mindfulness-based interventions and maintain personal mindfulness practices, allowing them to embody the qualities they help cultivate in clients."

Serenity Psychotherapy Group serves clients throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, offering both in-person and telehealth options to increase accessibility. The practice emphasizes cultural sensitivity and provides bilingual services to meet the needs of the diverse Washington metropolitan population.

The new mindfulness-based therapy programs are available immediately for new and existing clients. Initial consultations include assessment of individual needs and determination of the most appropriate mindfulness approach based on presenting concerns.
